This is the most common fault we see and also the one that quietly costs the most in water. A cistern passing water continuously can use more than the entire normal consumption of a couple. In most cases the failed part is the fill valve or the flush valve, and it is replaced without changing the cistern.
On concealed in-wall cisterns the work is more delicate, because everything is done through the flush plate opening. It is possible in the large majority of installations and avoids breaking the tiling. Only when the model is discontinued and no compatible part exists does opening the wall make sense, and we explain why before doing anything.
A dripping tap rarely needs replacing entirely. Normally it is the cartridge or the seal that has failed. We change the part and the tap works again.
The exception is very old or low end taps where the part is no longer on the market. There it is better to fit a new one, and we say so up front rather than attempting a repair we already know will not last.

On a replacement, the critical point is almost always the connection to the existing drain, because old dimensions do not match current ones. We carry adaptor fittings with us so the bathroom is not left out of use waiting for materials, which is what usually turns a two hour job into a week.
